AMULET
Ohnsdorf, Hungary, 1863
Artist: Moshe Wolf
Paper, ink, written, cut

This delightful paper cutout amulet is made after an engraved model by Morechai of Nytra, a well-known Jewish scribe and artist, who had lived in Nytra, now in Slovakia. We know of only two recorded copies of the engraved version of this amulet.

The use of the name of Lilith, the names of the patriarchs and matriarchs and Shir Hama'alot (Psalm 126) identify this paper as a birth amulet. The artist, Moshe Wolf, lived in Undsdorf, also in Slovakia (today there is a religious neighborhood in Jerusalem named Kiryat Undsdorf.)
