Passover Pillow Cover
Germany, c.1900
Linen, lace, silk thread, embroidered, sewn

One of the customs at the Passover seder is to recline at the table. Sometimes pillows were employed for comfort in this ritual act, and special covers were sometimes made for this pillow. This pillow cover is decorated on three sides with lace. It has a matching matzah cover embroidered by the same hand. This textile carries the symbols of the crown, the Ten Commandments (embroidered in a strange manner with three Commandments on one tablet and seven on the other!), and flowers and leaves symbolizing the spring season.
