Cloth Purim banner
Europe, c1920
Cloth, woven; height: 37.5 cm, width: 25.5 cm

This woven Purim banner is for either wall or table. The imagery shows a set table with flowers and a candlestick, illustrations quite often used in posters printed for the celebration of Purim. Above, on the two sides, are the two fish representing the (Pisces) zodiac sign for the month of Adar when Purim is celebrated. Such decorations were rarely made with textiles, almost always being printed or hand done on paper.

The banner bears the inscription, "mi'shenichnas adar marbin besimchah" - when Adar enters joy increases.
