Lag Ba'Omer

[1] "You shall count for yourself from the morrow of the Sabbath, from the day when you bring the omer for the offering, seven complete Sabbaths shall there be, until the morrow of the seventh Sabbath, you shall count fifty days." (Leviticus 23:15-16) [Back]

[2] lamed + gimmel = 30 + 3 [Back]

[3] A late tradition establishes Lag ba-Omer as the date of the death of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai, to whom the mystical Zohar is attributed; it thus came to be celebrated in particular by kabbalists. R. Shimon's burial place at Meron in the Galilee has become the scene of great celebration among Hasidim on this day, and the place they bring their three-year-old boys for their first haircut. [Back]
