PARASHAT BEHAR - Leviticus 25:1-26:2

The Sidra Behar Sinai (Leviticus 25) focuses on legislation intended to ensure that people-especially people in distressmay enjoy a secure life. The land itself must be taken care of. Land sold reverts to the original owner in the fiftieth year, the year of jubilee: When you enter the land that I am giving you, let the land observe a Sabbath in honor of the Eternal One. Six years you shall sow your field . . . but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land .... You shall proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants (25:2,10). We are tenants, not owners, of the ground we walk on.
