TISHREI
Table of Contents
Tishrei
is the seventh month in the religious calendar and the first month
in the civil and chronological calendar. Tishrei always has 30 days.
The name is not mentioned in the Bible, in which the seventh month
is referred to as Ethanim (I Kings 8:2).
The word Tishrei derives fr the Akkadian (Tashritu) or from
the Aramatic "sherei" meaning " to begin." Its
zodiac sign is Libra, which was related homiletically to the penitential
season at the beginning of the month. This period covers the first
ten days of the month, known as Aseret Yemei Teshuva, the Ten
Days of Repentance. This period begins with Rosh Hashanah (1 Tishrei)
and conclude with Yom Kippur (10 Tishrei).
According to the aggadah, during the month of Tishri the world
was created, the patriarchs were born, and Moses descended for the
second time from Mount Sinai.
